Bryant Scholars Pre-admission Program
In conjunction with the MU Area Health Education Center
(MU-AHEC), the School of Medicine has implemented a program to encourage young people
from rural areas to pursue a medical education. Studies have shown that students from
rural backgrounds are substantially more likely to practice in rural areas than students
from urban backgrounds. For economic and geographic reasons, these students often prefer
to attend state universities and other colleges in their region. The Bryant Scholars
Pre-admission Program allows students to receive their undergraduate degrees in their
region while preparing for medical school at MU.
Program overview
As many as 10 students per year will be admitted into the Bryant Scholars
Pre-admissions Program after their freshman year of college. These students are selected
for their academic achievement and the likelihood that they will return to practice in a
rural community. Faculty members within their regional college nominate the students. An
MU faculty/alumni committee will accept appropriate students to MU's School of Medicine,
which the students will attend after completing their undergraduate degree at their
current school.
To make it easier for Bryant Scholars to take multiple courses in the liberal arts and
other courses not commonly included in the intense science curriculum of the typical
pre-medical student, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is not required of program
participants for admission into MU's medical school. However, a superior performance in
the program's prerequisite science courses is necessary, as is satisfactory completion of
the other academic requirements of the program.
Additional enrichment programs in medical science are developed by the MU-AHEC Office in association with the alumni in the region of the
participating institutions and the MU School of Medicine and include leadership seminars,
health policy workshops and social events.
Upon enrollment into the School of Medicine, these students will participate in the
Bryant Scholars Summer Community Program and the
Third-Year Rural Track Program programs facilitated
by the MU-AHEC Office.
Acceptance into the program
Students nominated for the program must:
- Be a Missouri resident committed to returning to practice medicine
in rural Missouri,
- Be from a rural community of 18,000 or less,
- Be enrolled full-time at one of these institutions:
With a limited number of scholars chosen each year, selection
to the Bryant Scholars Program is competitive. Test score requirements
(a composite score of 30 on the ACT or 1300 on the SAT) are only
minimums for application eligibility. Selection is based upon
evaluation of full academic credentials and personal qualities
as determined through personal interviews and letters of recommendation.
Applicants who have strong interest in returning to practice medicine
in rural and other underserved areas of the state particularly
are encouraged to apply.
