MU-AHEC OfficeThe mission of the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Programs is to improve the supply and distribution of health-care professionals, with an emphasis on primary care, through community/academic educational partnerships, in order to increase access to quality health care. Rural Missouri faces several challenges in assuring the health of its people, including a declining economic base, large numbers of elderly and poor residents, rising health-care costs and shortage of health professionals. As a beginning step toward solving these problems, the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) is offering ideas on how we can work together with communities to improve the health of rural Missourians. MU's Rural Health-Care Mission The mission of the University of Missouri and its School of Medicine includes educating students, providing services to Missouri's citizens and performing research. With its large training complex for the health professions located in a non-urban area, MU is in a particularly good position to specialize in rural health care. The institution is formally dedicated to this purpose. Through University Hospital and Clinics, MU already provides health care to patients from every county in Missouri. Its goal is to enhance its commitment by partnering with rural communities to expand the availability of health care delivered. An Overview of the Program The MU-AHEC Rural Medical Scholars Program encompasses three distinct but related programs. The Programs are designed to be sequential to provide students with ongoing exposure to rural medicine, but students may choose to participate in only one of the programs. The goal of these programs is to increase the numbers of physicians in rural Missouri by recruiting the appropriate students, providing appropriate role models with a conceptual orientation, leadership skills and training students in rural settings.
