Polyhydramnios, its causes
Question
What is polyhydramnios? My doctor said I have a high level of amniotic
fluid. What could this mean?
Answer
Amniotic fluid protects the growing fetus by maintaining body temperature
and serving as a shock absorber against injury. Polyhydramnios means there
is too much amniotic fluid. The "Merck Manual of Medical Information" says
several problems may result from too much amniotic fluid, such as breathing
trouble in the mother because of the extra pressure on the diaphragm or
early labor. Too much amniotic fluid may occur if the mother has diabetes,
if there is more than one fetus, if the mother and fetus have incompatible
blood types, or if the baby has a birth defect. About half the time the
cause is unknown. It would be a good idea to talk to your doctor again.
It is often helpful to have your questions written down so you are sure
to get them all answered.
